NYC Exposed - New York City Online Photography Gallery and Challenge from FreePhotoCourse.com

The Brooklyn Bridge
one of NYC's most iconic landmarks and one of the world's most reognizable bridges

In Raphael's own words,  "New York is not just an American city, it's the capital of the world. As a visitor maybe I can show you a foreign view of this incredible city."

Although Raphael calls Brazil his home, he certainly understands the soul of NYC!  This dramatic image of the Brooklyn Bridge is stunning in its composition.  It's really a working historical landmark and Raphael's decision to shoot it symmetrically and from a wide angle enhances the power and stateliness of the structure.  Add to that a wide focal length and a highly angled perspective and you have a distortion that adds even more visual majesty to the bridge.

This is an excellent subject for this exhibit!  One of the worldwide marvels of late 19th century architecture and construction, the stone tower and steel cable bridge was the first suspension bridge in the world and was the longest bridge at the time of its completion.  The first bridge connecting Brooklyn and New York, this is a highly recognizable landmark that has been in countless movies and television programs.

What's interesting here is that Raphael decided to take just a piece of it, which makes the image even more artistic.  His exposure is perfect - just enough light to discern the stone block on the tower, just enough shade to create silhouette from the cables - fantastic work overall!

Carlos Andrew Thomas is a professional photographer hailing from the Big Apple.  He does a variety of artistic cityscape, event, wedding and other types of photography.  His candid and casual moment-of-time photo shown above is an excellent depiction of an aspect of NYC life.

Coney Island's Mermaid Parade is one of the largest art parades in the US and heralds the beginning of summer.  It is said to be one of NYC's most loved summer events, drawing young people of diverse backgrounds, perspectives and interests.  The artistic aspect of the event and its participants is both evident and is highly celebrated.  Many of the participants and onlookers are there to take-in the interesting sights, while others take part to get their personal or political message across to others.  Whatever the reason for attending, it is quintessentially NYC fun and an interesting spectacle!

Carlos snapped this interesting jumble of parade life in front of "Nathans Famous" - a decades-old City landmark.  What a great location for what's going on!  His exposure and perhaps a bit of Photoshop processing gives the image a bit of a nostalgic appearance.  The moderately short depth of field is enough to prevent "clutter" from taking over.  For instance, the Nathan's sign is recognizable enough to be a location clue, but not clear enough to vie for attention.  The candid nature of this photo makes it authentic and gives the viewer a better sense of what's going on.

Carlos says, "
My submissions deserve to be represented I feel because they each capture particulars about the New York experience which I believe are most notable. The Mermaid parade highlights relationships in the city, diversity in the city and good times
enjoyed by young New Yorkers.  In a few words, my images represent the
infamous NYC pace, and its being full of life."

Pearl Paint Building, Manhattan

This submission by Ben Fuchs caught the attention of our Submissions Review Team because of its gentle irony.  That familiar neon sign and the red and white brick building with multiple old windows on its face is an iconic fixture along Canal Street.  What's a bit ironic is that this is a highly artistic photo of one of the City's most beloved fine art supply stores!

What we really like about this image is its liveliness, composition and exposure.  The perspective is not only interesting, it creates an eye-movement  sweep that connects so dramatically with the billowing clouds in the sky above.

Ben chose to shoot this at dusk, obviously using a tripod to stabilize the picture at the decidedly slow 1/13 shutter speed.  The slow shutter allowed the paint sign and dimly-lit facade of the building to glow warmly and to see the lights behind the  middle right window.     You   would expect the sky to blow-out in an over-exposure, but it is also gentle and retains its color.

Composition, exposure, focus and perspective are all fantastic!

If you've ever set foot in the store, you have to agree that the smell of old paint and the creaky wooden stairs and floors are a big part of the life-blood of this old building.  Ben's picture gives a different sense of the creative - one that perhaps captures another artistic and beautiful side of it!
