"My camera takes terrible pictures.
I obviously need a new one."

Sound famliar?  Oh, how often photo retailers hear that one, and of course, they are only too willing to oblige! But, before you rush out and get yourself a new camera, understand that, while a better or more expensive camera can improve the quality of your images, how you use the camera will have the most profound influence on your results. The reality is that most digital camera owners know very little about how to use their equipment effectively and know even less about the artistic aspects of 'composition'.

Yes, a newer or better camera may well improve your enjoyment of photography and the images you produce, but never discount the importance of HOW you use your equipment.

A Friendly Competition...Who Will Win?

Imagine two people, each holding a camera. One is a professional photographer with a strong sense of the aesthetic and the other is your average "picture taker". One of the cameras is a $5 disposable film camera and the other is a fantastic Nikon D-300 Digital SLR (DSLR) that cost $1,800. Here's the twist you weren't expecting; the photo artist gets the throw-away camera and the everyday guy gets the Nikon. Who will produce images that are most compelling, attractive and worthy of printing?

(Here's a hint. Put your money on the photo artist.) Yes, the disposable camera is inferior, no doubt about it. It contains a type of film that is very sensitive to light, meaning that the resulting images will be more grainy or speckled. It also has a tiny, cheapo plastic lens that means images won't be as clear and less light gets into the camera. El cheapo camera also lacks
manual controls, meaning that the pro doesn't have the flexibility to manipulate things like exposure and shutter speed.

Yet, despite all of these shortcomings, it's highly likely that the pro will turn-out an image that is more imaginative and artistically appealing. It's no wonder
. The pro knows how to take that inexpensive piece of plastic and do things with light, shadows, proximity, perspective, framing and subject matter that would likely never had occurred to the novice.
